Wycliffe Caribbean Statement of Faith and Pastoral Declaration of Orthodoxy

Dear Pastor,

The Wycliffe Caribbean Statement of Faith is printed below in italics. Note that it is identical to that of the Evangelical Alliance of the Caribbean.

One of your church member is applying to serve with Wycliffe Caribbean. We would like you to verify your member's understanding and belief of each of these seven points of doctrine. We have provided some initial questions to help you probe the candidate's understanding and belief.

Please fill in and sign the declaration following the Statement of Faith.

We believe in:

  1. The Holy Scriptures as originally given by God are divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

In what way is the Bible authoritative? Are the Scriptures factually and historically accurate? Why are the Scriptures important?

  2. There is one God eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In what ways do the three persons of the Godhead relate? How is this triune relationship presented in Scripture?

  3. Our Lord Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh; we affirm His virgin birth, sinless humanity, divine miracles, bodily resurrection, ascension, ongoing mediatorial work, and personal return in power and glory.

What do you believe about Jesus’ birth and divinity? What do you understand from the term "mediatorial" work? What effect does his death have for us?

  4. The salvation of lost and sinful humanity is possible only through the merits of the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, received by faith apart from works, and is characterized by regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

What happened when Adam and Eve sinned? In what ways are we affected by sin? What happens to those who have never heard of Christ? How is a person saved? How do “works” fit into our salvation? What does regeneration mean?

  5. The Holy Spirit enables believers to live a holy life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to live a holy life in this world? How does the Holy Spirit help Christians?

  6. The Church, the Body of Christ, consists of all true believers.

What is the Church? What are her functions? Is it important for a believer to be involved in a local church? What is the nature of the sacraments of baptism and communion? In what way does a local church have authority in one’s life? What is the universal Church?

  7. Ultimately God will judge the living and the dead, those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

Will God judge the people of the world, and, if so, on what basis? Is there eternal life and eternal punishment?

Declaration:

I have questioned the candidate for Wycliffe Caribbean membership about each of the seven points in the Wycliffe Caribbean Statement of Faith, and discussed it with him or her. I am convinced he or she has an adequate understanding of each point and is convinced of its truth.
