Dear Pastor,
Wycliffe Caribbean is a member of a large family of Bible translation organisations. Wycliffe worldwide totals more than 12,000 members and committed volunteers, drawn from over a hundred nations and from scores of denominations. Wycliffe personnel also work together with thousands of people from other mission organisations, and with workers from both national, and indigenous churches.
Although most Christians readily accept the basic doctrines in the Wycliffe Caribbean Statement of Faith, certain theological issues have a potential to divide Christians. Much can be said and proved on either side of these theological issues. Division and discord, however, cannot be allowed to happen within Wycliffe or between its workers and those of other organisations.
It is therefore essential that Wycliffe members evidence an attitude of compatibility with other Christians who may adhere to opinions that differ from theirs on certain doctrines. This means Wycliffe members are free to hold certain convictions and beliefs and practice them personally, but may not cause disunity or discord by being critical of others or seeking to convince them of the rightness of their own opinion on these debateable issues.
We would like to verify your church member's capacity of living and working with others in a harmonious, agreeable, and congenial atmosphere. We need the answer to the question: Is the applicant compatible with people who may not hold to his or her views on certain debatable theological issues?
The following are some of the issues with a potential for disharmony:
- The eternal security of the believer: Can we be sure of our salvation? What is the basis for our security? What are our responsibilities as human beings? What is the relationship between God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility?
- The roles of men and women in the home and church: What are the roles of men and women? What is biblical and what is cultural? What leadership roles are appropriate for women in organisations such as Wycliffe?
- Spiritual Warfare: What is meant by spiritual warfare? What is Satan’s role in spiritual warfare? How can one prepare one’s self for spiritual warfare?
- The Return of Christ: What will happen at Christ’s return? What is the purpose of Christ’s return? What series of events lead up to Christ return?
- The gifts of the Holy Spirit: and the way they manifest themselves. What is the role of speaking in tongues? Is healing always God's will? What is the role of prophecy today?
- Any other potentially divisive view the candidate holds. Christians are often divided on such things as Bible versions, church organisation, and liturgy, etc.
Declaration of Compatibility
I have questioned the Wycliffe candidate about each of the above potentially divisive issues and discussed it with him or her. I am convinced he or she shows the attitude of compatibility essential for living and working together with people who hold a different view on these type of theological issues.
