Wycliffe CaribbeanPartners in Bible TranslationWycliffe Caribbean was founded in Trinidad & Tobago in 1993 with the purpose of assisting the Caribbean Church to mobilise its people to obey the Great Commission to evangelise the world. As one of a large, worldwide family of Wycliffe Bible Translation organisations, its focus is on providing the Word of God for thousands of people groups in the language they know best. Partnership: Wycliffe Caribbean sees the Church as been fully responsible
to carry out the Great Commission and sees itself as a servant to
the Church. It, therefore, involves the local church and its
leadership in every aspect of mobilisation, evaluation of
candidates, and care of members. Wycliffe Caribbean has a variety of information programmes to help stimulate interest in missions
and Bible translation. It also has a course of orientation for
those who have been accepted into membership. Training: Wycliffe does everything possible to ensure workers are well
able to do the work they are assigned to do. Specialist training
in linguistics and Bible translation is, therefore, available in
many parts of the world at SIL schools. SIL International is the
sister organisation of WBT International and is responsible for overseeing field work. Church Relationship: The application process starts with the individual filling in an application form in which the applicant's pastor states that he recommends his church member for membership with Wycliffe Caribbean. The pastor also indicates he understands that his church will be reaching out to Bible-less peoples through their church member and understands the implication for the church having a share of the financial support this church member will require if accepted for service with Wycliffe. As part of the application process, the pastor checks out the doctrinal orthodoxy of his church member against the Wycliffe Caribbean statement of faith. He also assures Wycliffe that his church member will live and work compatibly with workers from many other denominations and national backgrounds. The local church will also be the place in which a partnership team is organised to promote prayer for the worker. Finances: Since the Church is fully responsible to carry out the Great Commission, and since the church member is part of the outreach of the church through Wycliffe, the responsibility of underwriting the expenses of the church member lies with the local church. The Wycliffe member for his or her part is ready to share the vision of their call and ministry to the church and to individuals in or out of the church. A partnership team, usually based in the local church, is responsible to keep the missionary in the mind of the church, to commit to offering of prayer and financial resources. Committees: Wycliffe Committees currently operate in Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago. These Committees help to focus the attention of local churches on missions in general and Bible translation in particular. Strategic plans call for Wycliffe Committees to be set up and operate in most other Caribbean nations. We welcome those who would wish to serve on a local Committee. Full orientation and training will be provided. |
